Sania Mirza : India badly missed Sania’s firebrand tennis
Indian team suffered a double blow as they lost their the Asia/Oceania Zone Group 1 Federation Cup Group 1 opener to lowly opponent Indonesia 1-2 and star player Sania Mirza, yet to recover from her hamstring injury, rendered unfit for next pool tie.
Sania, who was rested for the first match, will also miss the second match against New Zealand on Thursday while the world number 29 has also been rendered doubtful for remaining ties.
Indonesia Wednesday defeated India 2-1 in their Pool A match in the Asia-Oceania Group I here, shattering their hopes for qualifying for the April-slated World Group II play-off in the Federation Cup tennis.
It was a double blow for the 21st ranked Indian team when it became clear that Sania Mirza, who is nursing a hamstring injury, has been ruled out for the for next pool rubber.
Sania was rested Wednesday against Indonesia. The 21-year-old, who ranked 29th in the world, will miss the second tie against New Zealand Thursday and is also doubtful for the remaining ties later this week.
Shikha Uberoi gave India the perfect start thrashing Indonesia’s Ayu Fani Damayantri 6-4, 6-1 in the first match at the National Tennis Development Centre here.
However, US-based Sunitha Rao failed to keep up the momentum as Sandy Gumulya, who is 44 places below Sunitha in the WTA charts at 235, made it even for 39th ranked Indonesia, defeating her in a tough three-setter 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
In the deciding doubles encounter, the Indian duo of Shikha and Sunitha faltered as they squandered a set lead to hand over the match and the rubber in favour of the Indonesians 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.
The Indians badly missed Sania’s firebrand tennis as other team members Shikha Uberoi and Sunitha Rao were found lacking at crucial junctures.
