Sania moves into last eight at Stanford
Sania Mirza has moved into the last eight of the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford.
The Indian, who is ranked 35th, beat 19th ranked Tatiana Golovin of France 6-4, 6-1 in the second round match that lasted about 1 hour and 10 minutes.
The Hyderabad hurricane broke Golovin six times as she blew away a much higher-ranked player. Mirza will now play Swiss Patty Schnyder, who beat Yaroslava Shvedova of Russia 7-5, 6-2.
Belorussian qualifier Olga Govortsova also reached her first WTA Tour quarterfinals when she upset fifth-seeded Shahar Peer 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
The 18-year-old Govortsova, at a career-high 100th ranking, got away with making seven double faults in beating Peer, ranked 18th.
